For nearly two decades, Huma Adnan has been one of Pakistan's most distinctive fashion voices a designer who took the free spirit of European bohemia and stitched it into the heart of Pakistani craft. Through three labels FnkAsia, Huma Adnan Bridal, and Craft Stories she has built a body of work that moves easily between the runway, the red carpet, and refugee training centers, proving that fashion can carry culture and conscience in the same seam.

Early Life: From Karachi Summers to a Business Degree

Huma Adnan was born on 23 July and raised in Karachi. She studied at St. Joseph's Convent before pursuing Statistical Mathematics at St. Joseph's College, followed by an MBA in Marketing and Advertising from the Institute of Business Administration, University of Karachi. Childhood summers spent in her family's ancestral town near Faisalabad surrounded by village crafts and colour planted the fascination with textiles that would later define her career.

She began professionally in banking, then stepped into fashion as director of the House of Amir Adnan, her husband's menswear label, before striking out with a label of her own.

Founding FnkAsia: A "Made in Pakistan" Fusion Label

In 2005, Huma launched FnkAsia, built around a distinctly Pakistani concept: East-meets-West fusion wear that combined global silhouettes with indigenous hand-crafting techniques. A transformative trip to Florence spent in fashion workshops sharpened her aesthetic, fusing Pakistan's traditional crafts with European inspiration. The label's popularity soon spread beyond Pakistan to the UAE, UK, USA and India, and FnkAsia is credited as the country's first fusion-wear label.

Her 2016 FPW collection, Midnight Garden, is a good example of the FnkAsia signature: garnet reds, emerald greens and gold embroidery, worked into voluminous silhouettes and lehngas with modern details like attached pockets and off-shoulder cuts. Actors Naveen Waqar and Hania Aamir walked as showstoppers for the collection, which was widely covered by Pakistani press and fashion Instagram accounts.

Bridal Couture and a Global Retail Footprint

Alongside FnkAsia, the Huma Adnan bridal line brought the same fusion sensibility to bridal trousseau contemporary cuts layered over traditional gold embroidery for a global South Asian clientele. In 2010, Huma opened a flagship store in California's Valley Fair Mall, becoming the first Pakistani designer to establish a presence at that location a milestone that marked her expansion into international retail. Today the label also caters to a private celebrity clientele worldwide.

Her celebrity following has crossed borders too: at sister Farah Khan's Mumbai jewelry showcase, Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan was photographed alongside Huma's mother Zarine and Huma Adnan of FnkAsia.

Craft Stories: Fashion as Humanitarian Work

Huma's most distinctive chapter is Craft Stories, a platform she built in partnership with the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) to train and employ Afghan refugee artisans in Karachi and women from Pakistan's Ghizer Valley. Refugee women hand-craft jewelry from ceramic beads, fabric, metal and stone pieces sold under the Craft Stories label that fund sustainable incomes rather than aid dependency.

As Huma puts it: "The immigrant crisis, and the plight of refugees, is my central focus. When people are forced to leave their homes, they bring their stories a reflection of the times in which we exist and their craft, which is, undoubtedly, unparalleled in its own way."

The Karachi exhibition Craft Stories, held at Serena Islamabad and jointly organized with Pakistan's Ministry of States and Frontier Regions and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, drew UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi and UN Under-Secretary-General Mark Lowcock. A related show, Let There Be Light, highlighted crafts from Afghan refugees living in Pakistan and was jointly organized with UNHCR.

Craft Stories on the International Stage

Craft Stories has repeatedly represented Pakistan at major international trade shows and cultural institutions:

●        Who's Next Paris (2020): Huma showcased Craft Stories' spring/summer 2020 collection of hand-sculpted tribal jewellery at this biannual trade show at Place de la Porte de Versailles a four-day event drawing around 50,000 visitors and roughly 1,500 French and international brands. Craft Stories was also featured in the event's VIP Buyers list book.

●        Good Goods Paris (Jan 2020): Huma won the podcast pitch contest at this responsible-fashion trade show, recognizing Craft Stories' sustainability model.

●        International Conference on 40 Years of Hosting Afghan Refugees (Feb 2020): Huma spoke on the "Facing Futures" panel at this UNHCR Pakistan organized conference.

●        IMPACT – WHO's Next Paris: Craft Stories' environmentally-friendly jewellery was showcased at Fondation Cherquei in Paris, attended by Camellia Galley, wife of the French Ambassador to Pakistan, along with members of the French and Pakistani communities.

●        WHO's Next League Paris (2023): Huma was invited as a guest speaker for the "Inclusion of Women in Creation" panel, held in collaboration with the Fédération Française du Prêt à Porter Feminine, where she spoke about indigenous craft and the women of Ghizer Valley and Karachi's Afghan refugee community.

●        Victoria and Albert Museum, London (June 2023): Huma led a "Compassionate Jewellery" workshop at the V&A, inviting participants to explore their creativity while reflecting on refugee experiences.

●        Isetan Shinjuku, Tokyo: Through Project Zindagi, Huma's collaboration with journalist Bandana Tewari and Indosole Tokyo produced a limited pop-up of eco-friendly, refugee-made sandals and accessories.

Domestically, Craft Stories products are also sold through Amir Adnan stores across roughly 25 outlets in 5 cities, extending the retail reach for the artisans' work well beyond the exhibition circuit.

Project Zindagi: Extending the Mission

In a further collaboration with journalist Bandana Tewari, Huma co-founded Project Zindagi, an initiative that widened the artisan network to more displaced women and paired craftsmanship with cultural preservation under the tagline: "Fashioning Hope, Empowering Lives: Weaving a Tapestry of Cultural Sustainability through Refugee Artisanship."
